And, "More pedestrian-friendly downtown part of city plan", by Jason Misner, front page of the Burlington Post, Jan. 21, 2010:

"What do you think of an open-air, seasonal pedestrian mall in the downtown? A four-star hotel? Or, perhaps, a farmers market or a lunchtime music series?
These are some of the ideas the city is kicking around as it looks to find ways to make an even bigger splash on downtown shoppers over the next several years..."

Debra Schreiber, My View : Why shop locally?

Mar 30, 2010, Burlington Post

“Shop local” or “buy local” campaigns are familiar mantras for many downtown shopping districts south of the border. There’s a lot to be learned from our American cousins.

The Downtown Business Association is one of a chorus of voices in our city, including our community newspaper, which encourages Burlington residents to do the same.

The “shop local” phenomenon is not just a catchy tagline. There are very good reasons to spend your money in Burlington.

Some estimates suggest that spending at locally-owned businesses has three times the impact on your community dollars than dollars spent elsewhere.

Your decision to put money in the hands of local merchants means that you are simultaneously creating jobs, funding more city services through sales tax and promoting community development.

The City of Burlington's website announces the Brant Street Pier and Updates on this project.

Excerpt: The city believes it has upheld its responsibilities under the contract. The previous council approved the contract for the pier project in summer 2006. The city retained professional engineers to design the pier, hired a professional contractor to build the pier, and retained a professional engineering management firm to oversee the construction. With an incomplete pier on public display at our beautiful waterfront, it is the city and our taxpayers that have been harmed. Council will continue to pursue a course of action that fully protects taxpayers’ interests. Council and our community are anxious to get the pier completed. However, we need to protect taxpayers’ investment to date...

The pier project represents the final phase of the Downtown Waterfront Project that includes the now-completed
• Expansion of the Burlington Art Centre
• Construction of the 380-vehicle Locust Street parking facility (with retail and office space at street level)
• Addition of Discovery Landing at the foot of Maple Avenue (including an observatory, restaurant, water-jet feature and pond for skating and model boats).
